Email not dead, just moving to the cloud, expert says
Some industry experts have suggested that email is declining worldwide, but Redmond magazine writer Paul Korzeniowski indicated more businesses are migrating to cloud-based email archiving solutions.
The writer cited a Radicati Group study from 2010, which revealed that companies worldwide had 725 million email accounts and each accounted for 110 daily messages. By 2014, these numbers are projected to reach 950 million and 119, respectively.
Korzeniowski added that email archiving solutions offer a number of benefits for companies utilizing the technology, including restoring deleted messages.
"As it is with other market segments, cloud computing is starting to have an impact on this space because it has the potential to offload processing chores to third parties and reduce costs," he wrote.
Companies offering archiving solutions stand to benefit from a growing market. According to market research firm IDC, these systems are projected to generate revenue of more than $2 billion a year by 2015, increasing from $1.2 billion in 2011. IDC noted that the rise in cloud computing is a key driver of the growing profits.
